Celebrating the Art of Documentary Filmmaking

As a documentary filmmaker, the process of creating narratives is both fulfilling and meaningful. While online presentations allow for broader reach, there’s something special about experiencing the public response during a live screening.

I recently had the opportunity to screen my documentary, *Fawm Family Horse Racing Legacy*, in May 2025 at Woodland Towers in Stratford. The event was a resounding success, emceed by the talented Nancy Musselman, who brought her own flair to the evening. The positive feedback from attendees was heartwarming, reinforcing the importance of sharing local stories that resonate with our community.

In June 2025, there was the encore screening of the full-length documentary *Under This Roof*, at Woodland Towers. This special event featured the presence of both wood engraver, Gerard Brender à Brandis and author, Marianne Brandis. Additionally, I am pleased to share that *Under This Roof* will also be showcased at Gallery Stratford in September 2025, further extending its reach.

Witnessing the joy and engagement from audiences during these screenings is incredibly rewarding. I believe that showcasing local history not only enriches our community spirit but also fosters a deeper awareness of our shared past. This sentiment will be further celebrated in July 2025 when the City of Stratford hosts a “History Alive” event, featuring four of my documentaries. It’s an honour to be part of such a significant occasion that highlights our local heritage.

In an exciting development, I have initiated conversations with the Stratford-Perth Archives to archive all documentaries created in collaboration with the Stratford & District Historical Society. With over a dozen completed projects, I am pleased to see these important works being preserved. Too often, I have witnessed valuable film projects fade into obscurity, and I am committed to ensuring that our local history is retained for future generations.

As I reflect on the work completed to date, I am filled with gratitude for the support and enthusiasm from the community. I am also eager to share that new and interesting productions are in the works, promising to bring more captivating stories to light. Thank to all those involved for being part of this journey, and I look forward to continuing to celebrate our rich history together.
