Save Avon Crest – First Public Event

December 13, 2022 offered the public a first opportunity to hear arguments for saving Avon Crest, Stratford’s first general hospital.

Three experts with backgrounds in historical architecture and repurposing historical buildings, moderated by Howard Shubert, one of the seven organizers of the save Avon Crest group, outlined a number of options and cautions to the demolition of the building.

I attended the event for two reasons: a) to record video, b) to observe the initial phase of community action to save a local heritage building.

The evening provided a fascinating insight into the multiple issues involved in saving a historical building. And one of the principal concerns was the impact on the environment. There are typically toxic materials in older buildings, and the rumble from the demolition needs to be disposed in a manner that is as environmental friendly as possible.

I produced a short three minute video to outline some of the issues for the Stratford & District Historical Society.
